The Flower Carpet: a floral masterpiece

Brussels residents may know about the beloved Flower Festival, a cherished tradition held every two years in August. 

During this Brussels summer activity, organisers arrange thousands of blooms on the streets of the Grand Palace, creating a colourful 70 m by 24 m tapestry. The event is much-anticipated, with the flowers specially ordered from Ghent. 

Despite the grandeur of the display, the creation is completed in four hours. In a show of teamwork and community, several volunteers unite to transform the square into a spectacle of light, colour and patterns.

As is the norm, every year has a new theme. 2024’s creation is designed by Liege street artist Oceane Cornille. Titled Rhizome, it honours Brussels and Art Nouveau. This year also brings another change in the flowers used. Stunning dahlias will replace the traditional begonias, adding a fresh dimension. It will be a spectacular sight to behold!

While the event might get busy, you can enjoy the views for free. Or, buy tickets to the Brussels City Hall balcony for a less crowded experience.

Discover Brussels’ vibrant street art scene

Brussels doesn’t just turn into a giant canvas for flower arrangments. The city is also the home of a thriving street art scene. 

Brussels’s streets are adorned with stunning murals and frescos created by talented artists. 

This free, lesser-known summer attraction lets you discover these beautiful creations hidden in corners, nooks and sides of entire buildings as you traverse the streets. 

With over 60 scattered across Brussels, you can embark on a city-wide treasure hunt to uncover these urban gems. 

All aboard at Train World

Book tickets for Train World this summer if you’re hunting for August activities in Brussels.

Your visit gives you a glimpse into the past and present, with exhibits of the oldest steam trains in Europe and today’s high-speed trains. It’s a must-do for any fan interested in the evolution of the railway. You can also enjoy unique experiences, like being in a 100-year-old model or sitting in a train driver’s seat, like a real conductor.

Food, fun, and culture at the Indian Food Festival 

If you’re a foodie looking for things to do in August, then you’d better not miss the eighth edition of the Indian Food Festival! The event brings the flavours of India to Brussels at the majestic Parc du Cinquintenare. 

The festivities, which celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage, offer a fun day with food, dance and family experiences. 

Entrance to the festival is free, with attendees able to roam the different food stalls, delighting their senses with the exotic aromas. Choose from 100 dishes that offer a culinary explosion of taste, colour and spice. If you’re vegetarian, you’ll be pleasantly surprised, as most of India’s meals are meatless and delicious.

Even after you’ve finished eating, there’s more to enjoy. Cooking enthusiasts can discover the secrets of Indian cooking through cooking demonstrations.

For non-food-related activities, try your hand at a choreography workshop and learn authentic moves. Embrace Bollywood fever and sway your hips to live music. For something more relaxing, join a yoga in the park. Yogis will guide the outdoor class.

Got kids? No problem. Keep them entertained with jumping castles, treasure hunts, face painting, and more!  They’ll be busy while you enjoy the festival.

Uncover Belgian history at the BELvue Museum

Rainy days are common in Brussels, even in summer. Instead of staying indoors, visit the BELvue Museum and learn about Belgian history.

A ticket grants you access to seven rooms, each with a distinct theme: democracy, prosperity, solidarity, pluralism, migration, language and Europe. Nothing beats walking around market stalls. It’s the height of summer fun in Brussels! They hold a treasure trove of items, from fresh produce and coffee to collectables and pre-loved goods. In Brussels, you’re spoilt for choice, with markets offering something for every need or occasion. 

Brussels boasts many markets, each providing unique experiences and curiosities. From fleamarkets with secondhand items to global food markets with dishes from around the world, there’s so much on offer.

A Jurassic adventure at Dino’s Alive

Ready to walk with giants at Dino’s Alive? This immersive exhibit is a must-visit for everyone. 

The dinosaur exhibit takes you back 140 million years ago when the chicken-size velociraptor, the fierce t-rex and other creatures roamed the earth. 

Travel to their prehistoric world and set onto land ruled by awe-inspiring species. Dino’s Alive brings history to life with giant replicas that you can even interact with. 

Enhance your visit with a VIP ticket and immerse yourself in their universe. With virtual reality headsets, you’ll see life-like dinosaurs, hear their roars, and enjoy primeval landscapes.

Festival Bruxellons: a summer of theater and magic

Since its start, the Festival Bruxellons has become a special summer tradition. For two decades, the vibrant festival has showcased over 2000 performances. It returns to Château du Karreveld in 2024 to present the best in theatre, comedy, and musicals.

If you love theatre, try Festival Bruxellons for size. It has an amazing lineup, with world-class performances, like the hit musical “Come From Away.” If you don’t like musicals, this year’s 22 shows have something for everyone.

The festival’s venue offers a lovely setting for shows. The charming castle provides the perfect atmosphere for enjoying performances. This summer, experience theatre under the stars.

Enjoy the views from the top of the Atomium 

Heralded as the symbol of Brussels and Belgium, the Atomium doesn’t require further introduction. Its giant, three-dimensional cube makes it a unique, must-see landmark. 

While there’s lots to see, climbing to the top of the Atomium during summer is a highlight. Panorma and the View Point offer breathtaking views across Brussels. On clear days, you can even glimpse Antwerp. Despite the crowds, the scenery is well worth it. 

In addition to the view, you can also explore the Atomium’s cultural exhibits and futuristic interiors.
